Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy is a roadmap to a positive experience, answering both commonly asked and difficult questions. This book is an easy-to-navigate and easy-to-understand guide that all expectant parents can trust.”

My Experience:

I love the Mayo Clinic books. Love.

I lived and breathed by the first edition of the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy when I was pregnant with my daughter. Some people may think that the Mayo Clinic books are too “medical,” but I disagree. I love how the book breaks down everything from How to get pregnant and maximizing your fertility to breaking down every single month of your pregnancy to post-natal information.

Each month there is an “exercise of the month”, a week-by-week breakdown of what is happening with your baby, explanations of what types of emotions you may be experiencing and any physical changes to your body of note. There are even checklists with questions that you may want to ask your OB/GYN at your check-ups!

The Mayo Clinic answers questions about what things are safe to do and eat during pregnancy, natural birth information/cesarean birth information and my favorite piece? Is that there is an entire section on symptoms that you may experience during pregnancy. This gives you a reference point so that you are not constantly calling your doctor if you have a new symptom.

I love that the book includes actual photos of your baby’s size, week-by-week.

You are only allowed 3 ultrasounds by most insurance companies, seeing what size your baby is in between those ultrasounds is wondrous and comforting.

My first book alongside my review copy of the 2nd Edition

The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy 2nd Edition definitely displays a great deal of changes from the 1st Edition. For example, in the 1st Edition at the end of every month of pregnancy, there was a “when to call” list. This list would give you a list of symptoms that you may experience and whether or not you should call your doctor now, within the next 24-48 hours or if it could wait until your next appointment. In the 2nd Edition this has been condensed into one list.

Included in that list was a reference to other topics in the book that you may be interested in and what page you could find it on. For example, pre-term labor or gestational diabetes.

There has also been a significant cut-back in pages. The 1st Edition had over 600 pages and the 2nd edition has little over 400 pages. It also has full color photos, which may have to better readability to some.

All-in-all, this book is an amazing resource for women that are pregnant or hoping to get pregnant. It is a great mixture of medical terminology and “layman’s terms” with answers to almost every question that you could possibly think of. What to eat, what not to eat, exercises that work, body changes- whatever you want or need to know about getting pregnant, being pregnant and newborn babies.
